Visiting from Kenya or abroad and need your medicine?

If you are visiting Texas, Oklahoma or Florida from Kenya, elsewhere in Africa or another country, a clinician can review your prescription from home by video for $39. If it is medically appropriate, we can send a prescription for a U.S.-available equivalent to a local pharmacy. No U.S. insurance is needed, and we speak Swahili.

Emergency? Call 911 or go to the nearest ER. Emergency rooms must screen you regardless of ability to pay.

How we help with medicines from home

  1. Join a video visit during clinic hours (Monday–Friday 11 AM–7 PM and Saturday noon–4 PM Central). You must be physically in Texas, Oklahoma or Florida during the visit.
  2. Show us what you take: the medicine box or bottle, your prescription or doctor's letter, the dose and how long you have taken it.
  3. The clinician reviews it and, where needed, identifies the active ingredient and a U.S.-available equivalent.
  4. If appropriate, a prescription is sent to the pharmacy you choose. Medication is paid at the pharmacy.

What to have ready

  • Your passport or other photo ID.
  • Medicine packaging or photos of it, and any prescription, clinic card or hospital letter from home.
  • Recent blood pressure or blood sugar readings, if you have them.
  • The name and address of a pharmacy near where you are staying.

What a video visit cannot do

We do not prescribe controlled substances, and a prescription is never guaranteed. Some medicines from abroad are not sold in the United States, and some conditions need an in-person exam, tests or a specialist first. If so, the clinician will explain the safest next step.

Worried about cost?

Please talk to us first. Visitors from Kenya, elsewhere in Africa and other countries are welcome to tell us if paying is difficult. We consider reduced-fee or no-charge help for self-pay visits case by case, based on need. It is not guaranteed, and we can also point you to other low-cost options.

Only need a medicine you already take continued? Americare's separate MedRefillCare service also reviews established, non-controlled medicines.

Questions visitors ask

Can a U.S. pharmacy fill my prescription from Kenya or another country?

Generally no. U.S. pharmacies usually need a prescription from a clinician licensed in the United States. In a $39 video visit, our clinician can review your prescription and medicine from home and, if it is medically appropriate, send a new prescription for a U.S.-available equivalent to a local pharmacy.

My medicine has a different name in the United States. Can you find the equivalent?

Often, yes. Many medicines are sold under different brand names in different countries. Show us the packaging or prescription so the clinician can identify the active ingredient and strength. Some medicines from abroad are not sold in the United States or need a different choice, and the clinician will explain the options.

Do I need U.S. insurance?

No. Visitors pay the $39 self-pay fee per video visit. Medication is paid separately at the pharmacy, so ask the pharmacist for the cash price and whether a generic is available.

Do you speak Swahili?

Yes. Tunazungumza Kiswahili. Call or text 469-951-0477 and ask for help in Swahili.

What if I cannot afford the visit?

Please tell us before your visit. Visitors from Kenya, elsewhere in Africa and other countries are welcome to talk with us about cost. We consider reduced-fee or no-charge help for self-pay visits case by case, based on need; it is not guaranteed.

Can you prescribe any medicine I take at home?

No. We do not prescribe controlled substances, and every prescription depends on the clinician's evaluation. Some conditions need an in-person exam, tests or a specialist first, and the clinician will tell you the safest next step.
