Describe what changed
Note when the rash started, where it appeared first, whether it spread, and whether it itches or hurts. Mention fever, recent illness, travel, exposures, or changes in products used on the skin. Several different conditions can look similar.
Use photos as supporting information
If the practice provides a secure way to submit images, use good light and include both an overall view and a closer view. Do not send sensitive images by ordinary email or text. A photograph may not replace a direct examination.
Get prompt assessment for warning signs
A very painful rash, fever, blistering near the eyes or mouth, warmth, drainage, or red streaking should be assessed promptly. Tell the clinician about symptoms beyond the skin and any rapid progression.
Know when it is an emergency
A rash with breathing difficulty, throat tightness, or facial swelling, or a sudden rash that is spreading quickly, can be an emergency. A rash of small red or purple spots that do not fade when pressed, especially with fever, also needs emergency care. Call 911. Do not wait for a routine visit or image review. This guide does not identify a rash from its appearance or promise how it will be managed.
