Urinary symptoms: what to report and when to get care

Burning, frequency and lower-belly discomfort can have several causes. Learn what to report and which symptoms are urgent.

Burning is a symptom, not a diagnosis

Pain with urination, frequent urges, lower abdominal discomfort, or a change in urine can occur with a bladder infection. Other urinary, genital, or pelvic conditions may cause similar symptoms. A symptom checklist cannot reliably determine the cause.

Be ready for a private conversation

A clinician may ask about timing, associated symptoms, prior episodes, pregnancy possibility, and relevant exposures. Depending on the concern, testing may involve urine, blood, or swabs. Discuss which tests are appropriate and where samples can be collected.

Testing helps find the cause

A clinician may suggest a urine test or other tests to find the cause. Some infections cause similar symptoms, and some cause few or no symptoms at all, so ask which tests are appropriate for you.

Seek prompt or emergency evaluation

Fever or chills with back or side pain, vomiting, or appearing very ill needs prompt assessment. Sudden, severe testicular pain is an emergency. Severe pelvic pain or concerning symptoms during pregnancy should not wait for routine scheduling. Seek emergency care for severe or rapidly worsening symptoms.

Emergency symptoms?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Do not wait for a routine appointment, phone call back or email reply.
