Familiar vaginal symptoms? Ask about repeat treatment—with a clear follow-up plan.
Previously diagnosed yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis can recur. Americare can assess whether repeating fluconazole or metronidazole is appropriate while arranging the pelvic examination and testing you need.
$39 self-pay clinical evaluation. Medication, testing and subsequent care are separate. Treatment is not guaranteed.
Repeat treatment may be reasonable in selected cases
This pathway is for adults with a prior clinician diagnosis and a familiar recurrence, not automatic treatment of all vaginal itching or discharge. Tell us what was diagnosed, when it was treated, which medicine and dose worked, how soon symptoms returned, and whether this episode feels different. Records or a prior prescription label may help but do not establish the current diagnosis.
Strict pelvic-exam follow-up
If interim treatment is offered, an in-person pelvic examination and appropriate testing must be arranged within the timeframe your clinician gives you. This is Americare’s proposed follow-up requirement for this pathway. An online evaluation does not replace that examination. New, changed, persistent or frequent symptoms may require examination and testing before medication.
Arrange care with your gynecologist, primary care clinician or another appropriate local clinic. Call us if you cannot arrange the recommended follow-up. Do not rely on serial refills to avoid an examination.

Vaginitis questions
Can you repeat fluconazole or metronidazole if this has happened before?
Sometimes. A clinician may consider repeating previously prescribed treatment for a familiar recurrence of clinician-diagnosed yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis after reviewing your current symptoms, prior response, pregnancy possibility, medicines and safety risks. Repeat treatment is not automatic. Pelvic-exam follow-up is part of this pathway; the clinician gives you a specific timeframe.
Are fluconazole and metronidazole interchangeable?
No. Fluconazole treats certain yeast infections; metronidazole treats bacterial vaginosis and some other infections. Neither is a universal treatment for vaginal symptoms. Do not take both simply because you are unsure of the cause.
Do familiar symptoms prove the diagnosis?
No. Yeast, bacterial vaginosis, STIs, irritation and other conditions can overlap. Your clinician may require an examination or testing before prescribing, especially for new, changed, persistent or frequently recurring symptoms.
What follow-up is required?
For this recurrent-symptom pathway, arrange an in-person pelvic examination and any recommended vaginal or STI testing within the timeframe your clinician specifies, even if interim treatment is offered. If symptoms persist after treatment or recur soon, seek reassessment rather than repeated empiric refills. Seek care sooner for new or worsening symptoms.
What if I might be pregnant?
Tell your clinician before taking treatment. Oral fluconazole is not recommended for vaginal yeast infection during pregnancy. Pregnancy or possible pregnancy needs an individualized plan; do not restart an old prescription on your own.
What symptoms need prompt in-person care?
Pelvic or lower abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, genital sores, unusual bleeding, significant pain with sex, or pregnancy with concerning symptoms require prompt assessment. Severe pain, fainting, heavy bleeding or feeling seriously ill may require emergency care.
How does Americare evaluate this?
Start through the secure virtual walk-in workflow. New symptom evaluations currently use video. The clinician decides whether treatment can begin remotely or needs examination and testing first. No guaranteed prescription or response time.
What does it cost?
A self-pay clinical evaluation is $39. Medication, outside testing, pelvic examinations and later visits may cost extra. Ask about eligible BCBSTX PPO coverage before paying. Once clinical review starts, the evaluation fee is generally nonrefundable; see the full refund policy.
Women’s health: symptoms, refills and follow-up
UTI, yeast, BV or an STI?
Burning with urination, itching, discharge, odor and pelvic discomfort can overlap. The cause determines the treatment; urine testing alone may not answer a vaginal-symptom question. Disclose possible exposures and any new or changed symptoms. DFW urinary-symptom page · UTI versus STI guide.
What if the symptoms keep returning?
A past diagnosis and prior response help the review, but do not prove the cause today. Yeast symptoms recurring within two months after treatment should be clinically evaluated and tested. Frequent recurrences may need a different diagnostic or longer-term plan. Your required pelvic-exam follow-up is separate from CPL specimen collection; follow the specific timeframe your clinician gives you.
Do I need the whole STI panel?
Not necessarily. The right tests and timing depend on symptoms, exposure sites, exposure dates and prior results. A negative test very soon after exposure may not exclude infection. The $145 bundle is a pricing option, not a universal screening recommendation; discuss the usefulness and limitations of herpes blood testing before choosing it. Additional site-specific specimens or repeat testing may be needed. STI testing does not diagnose every cause of vaginitis.
Can I refill birth control?
Ask the team whether your exact medication fits an available clinical pathway before paying. Have the label, recent blood pressure when relevant, pregnancy information and medical history ready, including migraine symptoms, smoking and clot history. A refill, new start or change requires individual review; the vaginitis pathway does not automatically provide contraception.
What about acne, tretinoin or spironolactone?
These are separate concerns, not treatments for vaginitis. Suitability depends on pregnancy possibility, other medicines and the need for monitoring. Ask about service availability and the appropriate evaluation before paying. No new acne program or automatic prescription is implied by this page.
What can I do while arranging care?
Avoid douching and irritating or fragranced vaginal products. Do not use leftover antibiotics, take both medicines just to cover every possibility, or repeatedly treat changing symptoms without reassessment. Seek prompt care for fever, pelvic pain, unusual bleeding or concerning symptoms in pregnancy.
